Britain back in business: Carmakers and builders start the road to recovery

Manufacturers, retailers and builders trial methods to resume their trade despite lockdown

Manufacturers and building firms across Britain are returning to work as the economy emerges slowly from hibernation after the coronavirus peak was reached. 

Carmakers Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have both set out plans to reopen their factories early next month with strict safety measures in place, and property developer Taylor Wimpey is resuming work on mothballed sites. 

There were also long queues at hardware chain B&Q as trading kicked off again, and crowds gathered at fast-food firm Five Guys after it allowed some burger restaurants to take collection orders. 

The businesses starting to reopen were never ordered to close by ministers, but shut anyway as the lockdown came in amid a slump in demand and pressure to slow the spread of coronavirus....
