Self Assessment: make the January deadline routine, not urgent
The online Self Assessment deadline for the 2025/26 tax year is 31 January 2027. That date also matters for balancing payments and, where applicable, the first payment on account. Starting early is less about speed than it is about having time to resolve gaps in records before they become expensive estimates or amendments.
Start with a clean evidence list
Collect the records that support each income and expense figure: employment income and benefits, bank interest, dividends, property income, pension contributions, trading income, allowable expenses, Gift Aid, student-loan information and any capital gains. Reconcile the list to bank activity and platform statements rather than relying on memory.
Separate calculation from cash planning
A submitted return can create more than one cash date. Estimate the balancing payment and any payment on account early, then ring-fence funds. If cash flow may be difficult, seek advice promptly: leaving this until after the deadline removes options and can add interest or penalties.
Use a short review sequence
- Confirm whether Self Assessment is required and register if needed.
- Compile source records and resolve missing figures.
- Prepare the return with supporting schedules.
- Review claims, reliefs and prior-year data before submission.
- Approve the tax position, submit and save the calculation and confirmation.
- Calendar payment dates and revisit the next year's records monthly.
Good tax administration is a management habit. A 30-minute records review now is usually more valuable than a rushed reconstruction in January.
